TANZANIA HOSTS FIRST-EVER CASSOA AVIATION MEDICINE REFRESHER TRAINING

The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), through the Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) of the East African Community Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (CASSOA), in collaboration with the AviAssist Foundation, is hosting the first-ever CASSOA Aviation Medicine (AVMED) Refresher Training to be conducted in Tanzania.

Speaking during the opening session, TCAA Director General Mr. Salim Msangi underscored the critical role of aviation medicine in safeguarding flight safety, emphasizing that continuous professional development of aviation medical professionals is essential in maintaining high safety standards within the aviation sector.

The five-day regional programme, taking place in Dar es Salaam, brings together designated Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) and Medical Assessors (AMAs) from across the East African Community (EAC). The training aims to strengthen regulatory oversight, enhance professional competence, and promote harmonised aviation medical standards among Partner States.

The refresher programme covers key areas including aviation psychology and peer support systems, cardiovascular risk management in aircrew, and familiarisation with aircraft and Air Traffic Control (ATC) simulator environments in line with ICAO requirements.

The rotational strategy of conducting AVMED refresher trainings among EAC Partner States reflects the region’s collective commitment to strengthening aviation safety systems and ensuring that aeromedical oversight remains current, effective, and aligned with international standards.
