The Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania has unanimously approved a total budget of TZS 2.746 trillion for the Ministry of Transport for the 2025/2026 financial year. Of this amount, TZS 125.4 billion has been allocated for recurrent expenditure, while TZS 2.621 trillion has been earmarked for development projects.
Presenting the revenue and expenditure estimates in Parliament, the Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, stated that out of the recurrent expenditure, TZS 96.7 billion will cater for salaries and TZS 28.8 billion for other operating expenses. For development projects, TZS 2.45 trillion will be sourced domestically, with TZS 168.5 billion coming from external sources.
The budget will support the continued implementation of flagship projects, including the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the strengthening of Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL). Strategic projects such as the upgrade of the Port of Dar es Salaam, construction of various airports, and enhancement of safety in maritime and air transport will also be advanced.
Furthermore, the Government will proceed with the construction of four cargo ships in collaboration with the private sector to boost trade between Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), via the Kigoma and Dar es Salaam ports. These vessels are expected to be completed within two years.
To enhance services and infrastructure across air, land, and water transport, the Government will implement key projects including the construction of the Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC), rehabilitation of the MGR and TAZARA railways, and the establishment of a new National Institute of Transport (NIT) campus in Lindi Region, which will offer training in maritime, oil, and gas transportation.
This move reflects the Sixth Phase Government’s strong commitment to strengthening the transport sector to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance both domestic and international trade.
Among those present in Parliament to witness the budget presentation were the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), Dr. Hamis Mwinyimvua, the Director General of TCAA, Mr. Salim Msangi, and the Principal of the Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC), Mr. Aristid Kanje.
