The Governments of Tanzania and Hungary have signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), a strategic step aimed at enhancing air connectivity, promoting trade, and stimulating tourism between the two nations. The agreement was formalized at the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) headquarters in Dar es Salaam, with Mr. Salim Msangi, Director General of TCAA, signing on behalf of the Government of Tanzania. His counterpart, Dr. Mate Lowinger, Director General of the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority, signed on behalf of the Government of Hungary.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Msangi emphasized the significance of the agreement in opening new commercial and diplomatic opportunities. “The BASA between Tanzania and Hungary is a strategic achievement. It will allow Tanzanian airlines to operate direct flights to Hungary, providing access to Central Europe. This expansion will drive economic growth, facilitate tourism, and strengthen international ties,” he said.
Dr. Lowinger echoed these sentiments, highlighting Tanzania’s geographic importance in East Africa and its role as a regional gateway. “Through this agreement, we are opening a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between Hungary and Tanzania. Our objective is to deepen economic, technical, and social collaboration through the aviation sector,” he remarked.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the Office of the Attorney General, and members of the TCAA management. The agreement is part of Tanzania’s broader aviation diplomacy strategy under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Sixth Phase Government continues to pursue efforts to liberalize the country’s airspace, attract more international carriers, and position Tanzania as a competitive aviation hub in the East African region.
